Masato Nakamura

History

Masato Nakamura was born on October 1, 1958. Before Dreams Come True, he worked as a session musician, quietly building a career in the background of Japan's music industry. In 1988, he co-founded Dreams Come True with vocalist Miwa Yoshida and keyboard player Takahiro Nishikawa. The band's sound was polished, accessible, and immediately popular. By 1989, their debut single had gone gold. Within a few years they were selling millions of albums.

In early 1990, Sega contacted Nakamura. They were working on a new platform game built around speed and a character named Sonic. They needed music. Nakamura was already a known name in the J-pop world — a million-selling artist with a schedule that kept him on tour buses and in recording studios. He took the job anyway.

The Green Hill Zone theme from Sonic the Hedgehog became one of the most recognizable pieces of music in gaming. It was bright, propulsive, and optimistic — melody-first in a way that separated it from the chiptune utility of most game soundtracks at the time. Nakamura approached the work as a composer, not as someone filling in sound effects. The result was music that worked in the game and outside of it.

For Sonic the Hedgehog 2, released in 1992, Nakamura composed another full soundtrack. Dreams Come True's song 'Sweet Sweet Sweet' was used as the ending theme. The line between his mainstream music career and his game work remained visible but porous. He did not treat one as lesser than the other.

After Sonic 2, Nakamura returned his focus to Dreams Come True. The band continued to release albums and tour through the 1990s and 2000s. In 2002, Nakamura and Yoshida founded DCT Records, their own label, giving them control over production and distribution. The band never stopped. As of the mid-2020s, Dreams Come True remains active, still performing, still recording.

Decades after composing Green Hill Zone, Nakamura's Sonic soundtracks have been re-released, remixed, and performed live. The music outlasted the hardware it was written for. In interviews, Nakamura has spoken about the Sonic work with the same seriousness he brings to any composition — not as a side project from his 'real' career, but as music that happened to live inside a game. A good melody, he suggested, does not care about the format. It only cares whether someone will remember it.
