ミシェル・アンセル

He drew a limbless hero from childhood rivers and fairy tales — proof that a world doesn't need explanations, only coherence.

About

Michel Ancel is a retired Monégasque-French video game designer, born March 29, 1972 in Monaco. He joined Ubisoft at seventeen as a graphic artist, began development of Rayman in 1992, and released it in 1995 for PlayStation, Atari Jaguar, and Sega Saturn. He is known for creating the Rayman franchise and the critically acclaimed Beyond Good & Evil. In September 2020, he announced his retirement from the games industry to focus on a wildlife sanctuary; one week later, reports emerged alleging toxic workplace behavior during his tenure.

History

Michel Ancel was born in Monaco on March 29, 1972. His father's military career took the family around the world, and it was in Tunisia where he first held a video game console. He conceived the character of Rayman as a teenager in the 1980s while teaching himself to draw, compose music, and program. At sixteen he dropped out of high school to work as a graphic designer for the French developer Lankhor. A year later he joined Ubisoft in Montpellier as a graphic artist, designing graphics for The Intruder and Pick'n Pile before making his first complete game, Brain Blaster, in 1990.

In 1992, at twenty years old, Ancel began work on Rayman as lead designer. The project began as a Super Nintendo game but was scrapped and reworked for the Atari Jaguar before finally releasing in 1995 on PlayStation, Jaguar, and Sega Saturn. The character had no limbs — a visual decision born from both artistic simplicity and technical constraint. The style drew from Celtic, Chinese, and Russian fairy tales, as well as Ancel's own childhood: rivers, insects, trees. He built a world without exposition, held together by internal coherence rather than narrative explanation.

Rayman succeeded. Ancel's career through the late 1990s and 2000s produced Rayman 2: The Great Escape (1999), widely regarded as one of the best platformers of its generation, and Beyond Good & Evil (2003), a critically acclaimed action-adventure that gained a devoted following despite modest commercial performance. He also directed King Kong (2005), based on Peter Jackson's film. Later came Rayman Origins (2011) and Rayman Legends (2013), both praised for their hand-drawn artistry and tight design.

In parallel, Ancel had been working on Beyond Good & Evil 2, announced in 2008 and repeatedly delayed. Accounts from those years describe a development process that stretched across more than a decade with no clear end. In September 2020, Ancel announced he was leaving the games industry to focus on a wildlife sanctuary, stating that his two current projects — Beyond Good & Evil 2 and Wild — were in capable hands.

One week later, the French publication Libération published an investigation into allegations of toxic leadership at Ubisoft. The report detailed accounts from employees who described Ancel as difficult to work with, to the extent that other managers were brought in to limit the number of people who had to interact with him directly. Team members attributed unusual levels of exhaustion, depression, and burnout to his management of the project. Ancel confirmed he was aware of the investigation but denied the accusations, calling the report 'fake news' and claiming his role was to bring vision to producers and managers, not to manage the team itself. The timing of his departure — whether directly connected to the investigation or coincidental — remains a matter of differing accounts.

Ancel's career is a record of what happens when vision is not matched by structure. He created worlds that felt coherent without needing to explain themselves — a rare skill. But the cost of that vision, as described by those who worked under him, was borne by people who could not leave as easily as he did. The lesson is not that talent excuses harm, but that the two can coexist, and the coexistence does not erase either.
