About
Peter Connelly is a British video game composer and sound designer, born September 8, 1972, in Newcastle upon Tyne. He studied music technology at Newcastle College, earning an OND and HND. His career began in 1995 at various studios before joining Core Design in 1998, where he composed the soundtracks for Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999), Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000), and co-composed Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003), the latter recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra. He has since worked with Eutechnyx and Ubisoft, contributing to Watch Dogs (2014), The Crew (2014), Driver: San Francisco (2011), and serving as Audio Director on Dead Island 2 (2023).
History
Peter Connelly was born on September 8, 1972, in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England. He did not grow up planning to score video games. The medium was still finding its voice when he was a child. But he grew up with music, and he grew up with an interest in how sound could be shaped by technology. He attended Newcastle College and studied music technology, earning first an Ordinary National Diploma, then a Higher National Diploma. The training was technical, but it gave him the tools to turn ideas into audio.
His career in the video game industry began in 1995. He worked at various studios, learning sound design and composition through projects that rarely made headlines. The work was not glamorous. It was the kind of apprenticeship where you learned by doing, where mistakes were cheap and lessons accumulated slowly. By 1998, he had enough experience to land what he later described as his dream job: a position at Core Design, a Derby-based studio owned by Eidos Interactive.
Core Design was, at the time, synonymous with one franchise: Tomb Raider. Connelly joined the team for Tomb Raider III as a sound designer, handling additional audio work. It was not a leading role, but it was a foot in the door. The following year, he was given a larger responsibility. The studio was developing Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, and Connelly was asked to compose the score. It was his first time as lead composer on a major title. The game released in 1999 to strong sales, and the music—atmospheric, percussive, designed to sit beneath the action rather than announce itself—was part of what made the world feel alive.
He returned to the series with Tomb Raider: Chronicles in 2000, composing its full soundtrack. By this point, he understood the franchise's sonic identity: environmental ambience, sparse melodies, tension held in silence. Chronicles was the last of the PlayStation-era Tomb Raider games before the series moved to new hardware, and Connelly's work carried the same restraint that had defined the earlier entries.
In 2002, he co-composed the score for Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness alongside Martin Iveson. This was the franchise's first outing on PlayStation 2 and PC, and the creative ambition was higher. The game's tone had shifted toward urban noir, darker and more cinematic than its predecessors. Connelly and Iveson took the opportunity to bring live orchestration into the mix. They recorded over forty minutes of music with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in under six hours. The sessions prioritized live strings and brass to give the score emotional depth, a sound that could not be replicated with synthesizers alone. The game itself was troubled—rushed to market, criticized for bugs and design choices—but the music stood on its own. It was among the first Tomb Raider scores to feel like a film soundtrack.
After Core Design, Connelly's career broadened. He joined Eutechnyx and later Ubisoft, working across a range of genres and scopes. He contributed to Driver: San Francisco (2011), Watch Dogs (2014), The Crew (2014), South Park: The Fractured but Whole (2017), and Assassin's Creed Identity, among others. His role evolved from composer to sound designer to audio lead to audio manager, shifting as projects demanded. In 2023, he served as Audio Director on Dead Island 2, a major action-horror release, overseeing the game's entire soundscape.
In 2018, he announced a passion project: Tomb Raider: The Dark Angel Symphony, a fan-funded album reimagining and orchestrating music from the three Core Design Tomb Raider games he had scored. The project brought in arranger Richard Niles, cellist Tina Guo, and vocalist Julie Elven, and it represented a return to the work that had first defined his name in the industry. It was not a commercial necessity. It was something closer to closure, or gratitude—a way to give those old scores the full orchestral treatment they had only approached in fragments.
Connelly's career is a case study in what happens when someone takes a single opportunity and builds outward from it. He did not start at the top. He started in additional sound design, earned a shot at lead composition, delivered, and kept working. The Abbey Road session became a moment people remembered, not because it was easy, but because it was fast and good at the same time. Deadlines do not have to kill beauty. Sometimes they just force you to decide what matters most, and then do it.
